Exhibition and Market
Altayskaya Niva is the most important agricultural trade fair of Siberia.
The Market
Russia is one of the worldwide leading exporters of grain. Demand for grain on the world market is increasing constantly. In West Siberia the big agricultural areas stretch out south of Taiga zone further south into Kazakhstan. The main centre of West Siberian agriculture in the Russian Federation is the fertile triangular steppe zone of Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Omsk. The agricultural centre of Siberia, the Altay region, has access to the big markets for grain, dairy and meat products in the heavy industry regions of Novokuznesk and Kemerovo, as well as in the industrial and scientific centres of Siberia like Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kemerovo and Novokuznesk.
Currently, in spite of the financial crisis, the Siberian agricultural equipment and machinery market opens up a high purchase potential for modern agricultural technologies, machinery and equipment, because enterprises can profit from special credit conditions within the national priority programme for the agricultural sector.
Furthermore the region has now - on 23 December 2008 - been announced by the Federal Government to become an especially important agro-territory in the Russian Federation. The project means an input of approx. 590 billion Russian Roubles until 2025, thereof 40 % will be subsidies from the Federal government and 60% will be private investments. Main focus is the development of infrastructure for agriculture and food industries. According to media announcements, the First Prime Minister Viktor Subkov said, that the development of agriculture in Altay Kray will enable to foster food supply and nutrition security in Russia, especially in the regions of Siberia and Far East. According to Governor Alexander Karlin, the intensive development of the region will also increase quality of life in rural region. Within the frame of the project, first of all there will be investments in milk production, poultry and pig complexes, as well as in enterprises for processing of primary agricultural produce and food production. Also the foundation of an agricultural university and scientific and research institututions on federal level in Barnaul/Altay is part of the project.
The natural preconditions of the region are characterised by a marked continental climate. This triangular region is very fertile with annual average rainfalls of approx. 550 mm. The black topsoil of the steppe zone displays a fine formation of humus layer, and during very hot although short summers (about 120 days free of frost) farmers cultivate vegetable, potatoes and high yields of grain.
Altay Kray with the capital Barnaul with an agricultural area of 12,5 million hectares, thereof approx. 7 million hectares farmland, is known as one of the main agricultural producers in Russia.
And in the north in the neighbouring Region of Novosibirsk, 3,4 million hectares are cultivated as farmland out of a total agricultural area of 8,16 million hectares. Main products are grain, potatoes, vegetables; important branches are animal husbandry, the production of dairy and meat. These products together with grain are the important export goods.
